Trip to New England
We started July off with a road trip to New England, this was our big trip of the year. We drove about 2400 miles in a few weeks and managed to wind our way all the way up to Maine, about 50 miles south of Canada. The scenery was really nice and the trip was relaxing for all of us. Nien and Damian became professional lobster roll tasters and Marcus developed a love for playing on the beach. Sophie didn't seem too interested in the sights or the food, but none the less seemed to be pretty happy most of the time

Marcus has been a sleep monster during July and has single handedly made our nights a nightmare. Since saying goodbye to the crib he hasn't slept a full night's sleep and needs our company (Damian sleeping in his bed usually) in order to fall asleep. We now stand poised and armed with information about why this is happening to us, why we are to blame, and more importantly how to remedy the situation. The last few nights of the month we have been using a tough love method to get him to sleep by himself. The method (from the book "healthy sleep habits, happy child") that we have been using involves simply leaving the room (yes that simple), and when he follows us or goes walkabout at night, picking him up and putting him back into bed without saying a word or looking at him. Simple enough, however on the first night of this process we estimate that there were at least 150 journeys between our bedroom and his, carrying a sometimes kicking and screaming 31lb bundle of joy.

Sophie has been a complete darling this month and has become ever more responsive to our coo's and burblings. She was the easier of the two on our road trip and has been growing and developing right on cue. We had the problem early in the month that Sophie wouldn't drink from a bottle, but over time we have managed to make her comfortable with a bottle; this was a must for her to start daycare at the end of the month. Sophie managed (with a little help) to get her passport, we will need to keep a close eye on her so that she doesn't go traveling anywhere without us. On the 31st Sophie started daycare, when we dropped her off she was sleeping so we don't really know her reaction to the new environment, her first day was uneventful, and hopefully during August she will grow to like it there.
